PocketMage is an open-source, distraction-free Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) designed by YouTuber Ashtf (Talisman Design), bridging the gap between portable typewriters and hardware hacking terminals. It caters to digital minimalists with its unique clamshell form, physical QWERTY keyboard, and dual-screen architecture, optimizing battery life and usability without receiving phone notifications. The device is now available for pre-order as a complete unit or DIY kit via a crowdfunding campaign on Crowd Supply.
The hardware features two distinct displays: a primary 3.1-inch sunlight-readable e-paper panel (320×240 pixels) for long-form writing, and a secondary 1.8-inch wide-aspect OLED screen (256×32 pixels) for instant menu access and typing feedback. It is powered by an ESP32-S3 microcontroller with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, supported by 16MB of quad-SPI flash, 2MB of quad-SPI SRAM, and a dedicated microSD card slot. The device also includes a 1200mAh lithium battery and modern USB Type-C charging capability.
PocketMage is tailored for individuals who prefer to focus on one task at a time. For writers, it serves as a pocket-sized, sunlight-readable typewriter that allows for concentrated draft writing in any environment. The physical keyboard ensures fast and accurate note-taking, while the built-in Markdown text editor simplifies formatting. The device’s design, featuring a dedicated keyboard for quick memos, terminal commands, and journaling, eliminates the friction associated with touchscreen interfaces.
