With a high-resolution 3.2K E Ink panel, Modos Flow is one of the most interesting mobile monitors on the market. This is because E Ink guarantees first-class readability in the sun and low power consumption. With stylus support, color display and a frame rate of 60 Hz, the display is nevertheless extremely versatile.
Modos already launched a mobile e-ink display on the market last year, but Modos Flow offers far better features. First and foremost, the new mobile e-ink monitor with a diagonal of 13.3 inches achieves a significantly higher resolution of 3,200 x 2,400 pixels with a pixel density of 300 PPI.
The screen can also display colors, but the resolution should drop to 1,600 x 1,200 pixels at 150 PPI, as is usual with E Ink. E Ink has two major advantages for a mobile monitor. Firstly, the power consumption is significantly lower than that of an LCD or OLED display, which means that the battery of a laptop to which Modos Flow is connected via USB-C is used much less. And secondly, e-ink displays remain perfectly legible even in the sun, with a front light available for use at night.

While E Ink is generally not fast enough to play videos, Modos advertises a frame rate of 60 Hz and a latency of less than 100 milliseconds - slow compared to an Asus ZenScreen ($265 on Amazon), but first-class for E Ink. The low latency should be particularly useful when using the touchscreen or stylus. Modos Flow is compatible with Windows as well as macOS and Linux.
Prices and availability
Modos Flow will soon be funded on Crowd Supply, but the manufacturer has not yet confirmed further details on price and availability. Further information on the hardware can be found at Kickstarter, even though the monitor will ultimately not be funded on this platform.
