The retro computing scene mostly focuses on the 1980s, but earlier machines are just as worth revisiting. [Michael Gardi] ported Lunar Lander to the PDP-1, a timely reminder of exactly that.
The PDP series and Lunar Lander are both icons with real connection: many people assume the game began with the 1979 Atari arcade machine, but the earliest text-only Lunar Landing Game predates it by a decade, born on DEC's PDP-8; plenty of veteran players have typed in its BASIC version on some machine or other.
This is not that older game. Even though the 1959 PDP-1 hardware is more limited than the PDP-8, [Michael Gardi] still got the graphical Lunar Lander running on the PDP-1 — anyone who has seen SpaceWar knows DEC's first minicomputer could handle graphics. You can try the emulator online or download it yourself. Only one working PDP-1 survives, and he hopes one day to get it running under a 'hackable' —
This may well be the most 'retro' project in this retro computing contest. There is no dedicated prize, but if you can make it even older, go for it — the contest has three weeks left, travel back in time and go win honours and prizes.
