Internet radio has been around for roughly a quarter century, and the spread of cheap networked microcontrollers has made DIY internet radio easier than ever. But how small can it get? [Milen] shared on Instructables an internet radio that is unusually tiny.
The hardware approach is straightforward: take a microcontroller, connect it to the network, and run internet radio software that outputs audio to a DAC. In this build the microcontroller is an ESP32-C3 soldered onto a very small development board, paired with a custom PCB carrying a PCM5102A I2S DAC and amplifier. The whole thing is extremely compact — the two connectors look large relative to the body.
Whether it deserves to be called a 'practical listening device' remains to be proven, but it is certainly small enough. The author also raises a question: could it be made even smaller? Dropping the connectors might be an easy win; stepping back and using the ESP's built-in DAC (not designed for audio, but usable) would also trade down in size. Readers are invited to contribute more extreme ideas.
