If you're reading Hackaday, you probably like Star Trek a little bit. We bet most people would quit their jobs today if a Starfleet recruiter showed up. You also have something in common with [PeterAJansen] — he's spent over a decade building a device worthy of the name "tricorder." If his latest iteration, the "Open Source Science Tricorder Cyberdeck," hasn't fully hit the mark yet, it's close enough.
Frankly, it looks more practical than the version from Roddenberry's original series.
"Tri" means three, but this device has more than three instruments — and the show's device did too, actually. You obviously can't scan for v trilithium radiation with it, but it's equipped with a scintillation crystal for spectral analysis of β or γ ray sources; plus a visible light spectrometer, thermal imaging camera, magnetic field camera, standard magnetometer, and common environmental sensors for temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity, along with particulate matter, VOC, and CO2 concentration sensors. Enough for alien exploration? Hard to say, but more than enough for Earth exploration.
The device is based on the Clockwork Pi uConsole, solving the form factor: a QWERTY keyboard and IPS display board, with all processing handled internally by a Compute Module 5. It may not be as sleek as the folding device from Star Trek, but the form factor is very practical. There are run-and-assembly videos in the GitHub repository where you can get all the details to build your own — after all, it's called the "Open Source Science Tricorder."
This isn't the first project we've seen chasing tricorder glory, but many care more about screen fidelity than science. Peter's earlier "arducorder" was a notable exception to that trend.
