What do you get when you combine a pogo stick, a quadcopter, and a University of Toronto engineering student? The answer is this "monopedal hopping robot" — which uses a spiked, rotating footpad tensioned by a rubber-band-like elastic band to keep its balance on terrain ranging from soft sand to hard ice.
It's an interesting concept. The thrust from the four propellers powers the robot's movement, while its hopping action comes entirely from the spring-loaded single leg "landing gear." Early versions used just a spike on the end of the leg, but that failed in some pretty hilarious ways — see the embedded video below. Giving the leg a proper grip-y, rotating, deformable foot made all the difference — now the robot can not only hop over fences, but it won't slip and slide when it encounters an unexpected patch of ice.
This isn't the first single-legged robot we've seen; some just use a leg, some have wings, but this odd quadcopter-hybrid is the first we've seen that's actually brave enough to take on a Canadian winter.
