Imagine a radio as a series of interconnected functional modules — this is the idea behind block diagrams describing how a radio works. [Julian Haag] brought this concept into SDR-, a software-defined radio program that can be freely assembled and configured.
There are already many software-defined radio tools on the market, with a wide variety of interfaces and configuration methods. [Julian] wanted to keep things intuitive and simple, so he made SDR-'s interface similar to a modular synthesizer. You can drag in modules such as radios, demodulators, and speakers, then connect them with patch cables to let signals flow as needed.
The author also built in a large number of practical decoders, so you can use ADS-B, POCSAG, SSTV, DAB, RDS, etc. right out of the box; it also comes with some interesting passive radar and direction-finding tools for advanced players to explore further.
The source code has been published on GitHub, and interested readers can check it out themselves.
Over the years we have introduced many ingenious SDR projects, such as real-time beamforming solutions. If you are also tinkering with radio experiments in your home lab, feel free to let us know via our tips email.
