A series of events in recent years have led many in Europe to reassess their dependence on large overseas tech companies, strengthening the drive to switch to EU-based alternatives. Individuals or businesses doing so is one thing, but an entire country acting as a whole is quite another—the Netherlands is building its own Linux distribution to replace Microsoft Windows for its government institutions, and the impact should not be underestimated.

The system is called Digitaal Autonome Werkomgeving (Digital Autonomous Work Environment, DAWO) and is built on NixOS—which itself originally came from a Dutch university. It comes with a complete suite of office and collaboration applications needed to replace Windows, and has reportedly been tested among a small group of Dutch government workers.

The impact on Microsoft could be huge: government customers often have massive numbers of operating system license seats. And perhaps even more important than the OS itself are the additional services Microsoft hopes to bundle and sell to OS customers, such as AI services. It is easy to imagine that management in Redmond (Microsoft's headquarters) will be keeping a close eye on how things develop in Europe.

On the other hand, the Netherlands has an active hacker community, and this transition is expected to be welcomed by them. All Dutch government online services require access through the identity verification app DigiD, and a common complaint among Dutch friends is that DigiD only supports Windows, Android, and Apple platforms—if the momentum of the Dutch government's Linux distribution leads to a Linux version of DigiD, many people would be very happy.
