While organizing content for a hearing test, I came across a reader comment requesting a discussion on e-ink smartphones. I had previously written about a few such devices, like the early Russian brand Yota Phone, which was actually manufactured by a domestic contract factory.

Today, I'll be covering the Bigme HiBreak Pro, which can be considered the strongest e-ink smartphone in terms of overall quality. It is powered by the Dimensity 1080 processor, with an official benchmark score approaching 700,000, clearly outperforming the Hisense A10 Ultra in terms of smoothness.

Many may be unfamiliar with this brand, so here is a brief background introduction. Bigme, headquartered in Shenzhen, is a boutique brand specializing in e-ink technology. Its parent company, Xinrui Zhi, began e-ink development in 2008, initially providing ODM services for electronic reading devices, including the development of the entire unit for the popular iReader. It was not until 2020 that they launched their own brand, Bigme, focusing on the colorful e-ink market.

With over ten years of experience in e-ink, the brand is relatively young and focuses on a niche market, resulting in very little exposure to the general public. Unlike Hisense and iReader, which place advertisements with domestic media, Bigme does almost no mass marketing, targeting hardcore e-ink users for exams, reading, and office work — well-known within the industry but obscure to the general public.

In terms of appearance, the Bigme HiBreak Pro is available in black and white, with a body thickness of 8.9 mm and a weight of approximately 180 g, making it comfortable to hold with one hand.

The front features a 6.13-inch e-ink display with slightly wide bezels, housing the front camera and microphone in the center top. The sides contain physical buttons: the left side has customizable page-turning shortcuts, and the right side features a distinct red power button integrated with fingerprint recognition, along with a volume key.

The back is made of a matte-textured shell with a vertical single-camera module in the top-left corner, flush with the back panel to prevent scratches. The bottom of the back panel displays the Bigme logo. The bottom of the unit contains a Type-C charging port, speaker holes, and a SIM card slot. The top is equipped with an infrared emitter for remote control compatibility.

The core configuration includes the Dimensity 1080 (6 nm process, octa-core up to 2.4 GHz) and runs an unlocked Android 14, allowing for the free installation of various apps. It features Bigme's own large model, voice-to-text transcription, and customizable physical button shortcuts.

The memory configuration is 8 GB LPDDR4X + 256 GB UFS 3.1, with support for TF card expansion. The display is a 6.13-inch Kaleido 3 colored e-ink screen with a resolution of 824×1648: 300 PPI in black-and-white mode and 150 PPI in color mode. It includes a 36-level warm and cold front light, SSS fast-refresh technology, and an xClear automatic image retention removal algorithm. The standard SSS fast refresh peaks at 53 Hz, but a subsequent official OTA update introduced the Hyper Super Refresh mode, which can reach 80 frames per second.

Network-wise, it supports 5G dual-SIM full-network connectivity, 2.4 G+5 G dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.2, and GPS. The imaging system includes a 5 MP front camera and a 20 MP rear camera, with support for OCR document scanning. The battery capacity is 4500 mAh, supporting 18 W wired charging. Additional hardware includes infrared remote control, NFC, a gyroscope, and a microphone.
