Free Ink is an open-source collaborative community dedicated to developing software, firmware, and hardware for e-paper readers. It offers community-built, fully open-source firmware for affordable e-paper readers, providing richer features, stronger control, and an open foundation for anyone to build upon. Currently supported models include Xteink X4, Xteink X3, de-link, LilyGo T5 S3, Sticky, and M5Paper v1.1.
For ebook reading, Free Ink parses EPUB 2 and EPUB 3, applies inline CSS, and lays out chapters with user-selected fonts, sizes, and margins. It caches pages to SD card on the first opening, making subsequent reloads near-instantaneous. It includes Noto Serif and Noto Sans fonts, with option to load any font from SD; fine-tune size, line spacing, margins, ligatures, alignment, and anti-aliasing.
The reader also runs a WiFi-based upload server for dragging EPUBs from any browser or sending via Calibre, and uses KOReader sync to maintain progress across devices. It supports right-to-left layouts (Hebrew, Arabic) and multilingual menus (Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish).
Beyond reader-specific support, the community maintains a software framework on GitHub for developers, enthusiasts, and brands to experiment with and customize their own hardware, further growing the open-source e-paper ecosystem.
