According to supply chain sources, the new generation Carta 1400 e-paper screen, originally scheduled to debut this year by E Ink, may see its mass production delayed until the second half of 2027. Several core E Ink contract manufacturers — including Foxconn, which makes Amazon Kindles; Netronix, which produces Kobo and NOOK; and Linfiny, specializing in B2B markets — have already received samples of the new screen technology to evaluate compatibility for future e-book reader designs.
Currently, E Ink’s official website does not even feature a white paper or product page for Carta 1300, despite it having been used in high-end Kindle and Kobo readers for years. The company has also not disclosed what specific upgrades Carta 1400 will bring. Industry rumors suggest the new panel will push standard optical contrast beyond 20:1, resulting in sharper text; lower latency that should allow flipping, scrolling, and handwriting to feel more like an iPad or real pen on paper; higher contrast for “purer” blacks and brighter whites, maximizing readability in outdoor and low-light conditions; and refined waveform techniques to significantly reduce ghosting artifacts and the “black flash” often seen during full-screen refreshes.
Looking back, Carta 1300 was merely a generational refinement of Carta 1200, while Carta 1200 itself represented a major overhaul from the ground up, delivering significantly faster refresh rates across the e-paper industry. Carta 1300 built on that foundation with only slightly improved contrast and lower latency.
The delay of Carta 1400 will have cascading effects, impacting the still-prototypical Kaleido 4 and Gallery 4 color e-paper technologies. These colorful alternatives will not enter the market until Carta 1400 is first deployed in black-and-white readers like the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. In short, the launch timeline for Kaleido 4 and Gallery 4 colored screens will also be pushed back in the near term.
