On October 1, 2024, tech media Windows Latest reported that current and former Microsoft employees have reacted to Apple's release of the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone.
Microsoft launched the Surface Duo on September 10, 2020, approximately six years before the iPhone Duo. Microsoft canceled the Surface Duo 3 and its intended replacement in 2023.
Following Apple's announcement, discussions about the Surface Duo surged on social media platforms like X and Reddit. Windows Latest compiled comments from Microsoft personnel.
Mat Velloso stated, "The thousands of people who worked on the Surface Duo must be beating their chests." Velloso worked at Microsoft for over 12 years and advised CEO Satya Nadella for four years.
User @SwiftOnSecurity commented, "The craziest thing is that literally everyone who worked on Surface Duo predicted this day." Velloso agreed, noting he anticipated Apple would "steal the spotlight."
Velloso expressed frustration over Apple naming its device "Duo," calling it "a slap in the face."
Velloso refuted claims that Nadella personally canceled the project, asserting that market acceptance determined the outcome.
Microsoft VP Scott Hanselman mourned the device's failure, stating, "RIP Surface Duo. Forever the bridesmaid..."
Former employee Hadjar Homaei noted that if still at Microsoft, she would have published psychophysics research on dual-screen usage, which was completed years ago but previously embargoed.
Jeff Fritz suggested Microsoft lacks patience for long-term projects, often canceling them if significant ROI isn't achieved within two years.
