IT之家 October 1 news: Trump signed an executive order yesterday to define “Super Intelligence” as the arts and platforms covered by the existing law’s “Artificial Intelligence,” replacing the term “AI” with “SI” in definitions and related legislation. For details, see IT之家’s report from yesterday.
On September 30 (local time), California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Executive Order N-10-26, mandating that all state government agencies under his jurisdiction continue to use “Artificial Intelligence” and its abbreviation “AI” in official matters to refer to such arts, unaffected by federal government’s use of other names.
Trump instructed that, to the fullest extent permitted by law, the US federal executive branch must use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in official communications, public broadcasts, websites, reports, policy documents, and other non-legal texts.
Newsom’s order explicitly states that regardless of what terms the US federal government uses, California state agencies and departments should continue to refer to these arts as “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI.”
In the order, Newsom wrote: “While language and terminological choices are critical, changing the name of a thing does not make a reasonable-minded person dismiss the well-documented emergent safety risks around that thing, nor the scale of the challenges in taking action against those risks.”
A statement from Newsom’s office on September 30 confirmed that the order aims to keep California using the name “Artificial Intelligence.” Newsom also said: “Super intelligence clearly isn’t coming from the White House — which is why California continues to lead.”
