Mechanical television—using a Nipkow disk plus a light bulb, relying on persistence of vision to piece together images—has a principle that is not hard to understand. But putting this technology into the third dimension? That is a bit mind-bending. Fortunately, AncientJames uses an intuitive visual demonstration to explain the trick.
He did not use a disk for line-by-line scanning; instead he used a high-speed rotating drum with holes. In place of a single light bulb is a set of LED dot-matrix screens, each with a resolution of 32×64 pixels. The key is to decompose the model into a light field, letting each hole project the object's respective part of the image at the correct angle.
This demonstration used three dot-matrix screens, but they are arranged as half of a hexagonal prism, so the viewing angle is limited—achieving a full 360 degrees would require more screens. The equivalent resolution seen through the drum is only about 100×48 pixels per eye, but this is already enough to run DOOM.
This is not the first time this Ancient has run DOOM on a volumetric display; referring to his earlier results (fog-mirror laser multi-view 3D projection, laser-plus-bubble-glass volumetric display), it probably will not be the last either. And this implementation keeps the display stationary and does not require an expensive laser projector, making it look like the easiest version to replicate—just take care not to hurt your fingers.
