CNMO Technology News: In the afternoon of September 7th, Huawei unveiled the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Master Edition in Guangzhou; later that evening, Xiaomi introduced the 18 Fold in Beijing. Two days later, on September 10th, Apple revealed the iPhone Duo at Apple Park. These three flagship foldable events occurred within a 72-hour window, all positioned in the five-figure price bracket. With foldables turning seven years old, this marks the first time Apple, Huawei, and Xiaomi have confronted each other head-on during the same time frame. RUNTO believes this week sends a clear signal: foldables are transitioning from a niche experimental field in the Android camp to a central battleground in global smartphone market share. More critically, the divergent technical routes chosen by the three companies are becoming sharply defined.

Huawei pursues the ultimate form factor. The Mate XT 2 evolves from the previous Z-shaped outward fold to a U-shaped dual inward fold, offering three distinct screen sizes (6.4", 7.9", 10.2") in a single device. Powered by the new Kirin 9050 Pro chip and the full-scene multi-window capabilities of HarmonyOS 7, it commands a premium starting price of 19,999¥, with the top model reaching 24,999¥. The logic is explicit: the ceiling for foldables is defined by innovative form factors, and Huawei aims to fully realize the "tablet when unfolded" paradigm.

Xiaomi has pivoted to a different lane. The 18 Fold abandons the MIX Fold series to bet on the "mid-fold" category, featuring a 5.38" outer screen and a 7.58" inner screen. Weighing only 219 grams, it approximates a standard flagship slab phone while starting at 10,999¥. Xiaomi attempts to answer the question of balancing large-screen functionality with portability through a novel screen aspect ratio, rather than constantly increasing device size.

Apple, as the latest entrant, carries its characteristic approach. The iPhone Duo maintains a consistent aspect ratio between its inner (7.6") and outer (5.4") screens. It is equipped with the 2nm A20 Pro chip and a proprietary C2 modem, and the inner screen features an under-display camera for the first time. Prices start at 15,999¥, with the premium model at 26,499¥. While the specs aren't groundbreaking, Apple defines its foldable standard not by pushing form factors, but by prioritizing completion, ecological integration, and consistency.

Foldable Supply Chain Shift: Samsung Solely Supplies Apple, Chinese Panels Lead Android

RUNTO identifies a clear pricing hierarchy in the current foldable market: Xiaomi sets the threshold for standard phone upgrades at 10,999¥; Apple anchors the mainstream premium tier at 15,999¥; and Huawei guards the pinnacle of form factor innovation at 19,999¥.

In the upstream supply chain, the most noticeable impact is on display panels. The flexible OLED for Apple's first foldable is exclusively supplied by Samsung Display (SDC). According to RUNTO's industrial chain information, the two have signed a three-year exclusive agreement covering the first three generations of the iPhone Duo: initial delivery of 3 million panels in 2026, scaling to 8 million annually, with front-end production in Korea and back-end module assembly in Vietnam. Additionally, Apple is simultaneously cultivating BOE to become a secondary supplier by 2029, ending Samsung's monopoly.

Within the Android camp, both Huawei and Xiaomi utilize domestic panel manufacturers. For Huawei, BOE is the primary supplier, custom-designing the U-shaped dual-inner-fold screen, while Visionox serves as a secondary supplier for the outer screen. Xiaomi relies heavily on TCL CSOT for its inner screen, leveraging their long-standing partnership as Xiaomi's largest OLED provider.

UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) cover plates are another significant area of growth. Both Huawei and Xiaomi use UTG raw materials from Chinese manufacturer Kaisheng Technology, with BlueGlass involved in the subsequent processing steps. Apple's UTG chain includes BlueGlass and Bern Optics processing Corning's raw UTG, which is then bonded to Samsung panels before being shipped to Foxconn. RUNTO notes that the focus in this sector is shifting from cost competition to improvements in yield rate and process quality.

Regarding market volume, RUNTO predicts global foldable shipments will reach 22.5–25 million units in 2026, with China accounting for roughly 50%. However, foldables still represent less than 3.0% of the total smartphone market, indicating significant room for growth.

Foldable Supply Chain Shift: Samsung Solely Supplies Apple, Chinese Panels Lead Android

RUNTO argues that Apple's entry changes the conversation fundamentally. Rather than merely adding a competitor, Apple's 15,999¥ price point legitimizes the luxury segment, turning "should I buy a foldable?" into a mainstream debate. When the most conservative player adopts the form factor as a flagship standard, user acceptance thresholds are lowered, and the pressure mounts for the Android ecosystem to refine its application support for larger screens.

User satisfaction hinges primarily on three factors: minimizing creases, reducing weight, and lowering costs. While the iPhone Duo achieves near-slab-like weight and crease visibility, it does so at a premium price. Android devices are generally cheaper but have historically struggled with durability and visible fold lines.

Looking ahead to 2030, RUNTO forecasts that component yields will exceed 90%, driving average prices down to under 7,000¥ and pushing annual shipments to over 45 million units. The period between now and 2027 will be critical as companies battle over form factors, ecosystems, and supply chain dominance. Huawei innovates on shape, Xiaomi captures the upgrade market, and Apple sets the benchmark for quality—all while the underlying display and materials sectors reap the benefits of increased demand.

Ultimately, the "desirability" of foldables is shifting from a question of technical feasibility to one of economic value. The 72-hour release spree is just the opening act; the true competition for market share and consumer preference has only begun.
