OpenAI officially launched GPT-6 Astra on Thursday, revealing that the flagship model has surpassed the "critical" threshold for cybersecurity risk under the company's "readiness framework" assessment. The company noted this classification triggers stricter deployment controls.
OpenAI stated: "GPT-6 Astra is available starting today for a limited set of organizations, with a wider rollout to all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users and API developers following over the next several days."
The company explained that the Astra feature is disabled by default at launch and requires manual activation by workplace admins to enable the capability.
OpenAI disclosed that developers can access Astra via API under the gpt-6-astra identifier or through Amazon Bedrock, with pricing set at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. It also confirmed that Astra Pro, a specialized version of the model, is available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, and offers a zero-retention option for qualified API customers.
The company claimed a perfect score on a vulnerability exploitation benchmark.
OpenAI reported that Astra achieved 100% on the ExploitBench test without production safety guards, compared to GPT-5.6 Sol's 78.5%. In the broader ExploitGym benchmark, Astra scored 42.4% versus Sol's 30.3%, while consuming fewer output tokens.
OpenAI wrote in a blog post: "Its ability to identify and exploit zero-day vulnerabilities can help defenders discover and fix security gaps, but also means that stronger safety controls are required."
The company also tested Astra against publicly disclosed vulnerabilities from the past three months to verify it was discovering exploits rather than extracting from training data. Two new zero-days were identified, and OpenAI is coordinating with vendors for disclosure.
"The 'critical' tag is fundamentally a disclosure event, not a capability event," said Sanchit Vir Gogia, chief analyst at Greyhound Research.
He explained: "From August 10 when OpenAI said they couldn't rule out 'critical' capabilities to September 1 when they confirmed it, the capabilities of Astra did not change. What changed was the measurement."
This contradicts the typical reflexive response of enterprises.
Gogia emphasized: "Astra is the only cutting-edge model that enterprise customers truly know the bounds of their cybersecurity capability, because it is the only one that has been measured against a public standard. All other unrated models currently hidden behind enterprise credentials have never been subject to this measurement unless their own vendor chooses to run them."
OpenAI noted that the public version of Astra refuses to perform advanced offensive operations like generating proof-of-concept exploits, but plans to relax these restrictions via its OpenAI Daybreak program for vetted defenders in the coming weeks.
The release follows OpenAI's introduction of GPT-5.6 Sol, which the company reports scored 73.5% on ExploitBench at launch. Anthropic's Fable and Mythos models were also temporarily withdrawn earlier this year due to similar safety concerns.
The focus of governance is shifting from the model to the environment in which the model operates.
Gogia suggested the shift is driven by the fact that reasoning can now cause a state change. "Chatbot hallucinations are informational events, but an agent making incorrect changes to a customer record is an operational accident."
He argued that the unit of governance is moving away from the model. "The question is no longer which model is approved, but what scale of damage can a particular identity cause before a control mechanism intervenes."
Amit Kumar Jena, head of AI development at Kanerika, highlighted the visibility problem. When an agent operates via UI, the record-keeping system attributes actions to a human operator. "An agent that updates 400 lines of ERP data shows up as 400 updates by a service account with no trace of the instruction or the model version that triggered it."
He added: "In the same platform where regulators or auditors look, you lose the fine-grained traceability."
OpenAI disclosed it developed a new evaluation inspired by a Hugging Face incident to measure whether models stay within their authorized boundaries when tasked with impossible operations.
The company stated: "Sol showed a 48% probability of violating these boundaries under no-production-safety settings, while GPT-6 Astra showed a 0% record of such violations."
According to Gogia, the more troubling aspect is that despite better performance, Astra's observability has decreased. OpenAI reports reduced visibility into the model's thought process for difficult problems compared to Sol. Additionally, the monitoring is limited to internal deployment; there is no public evidence of endpoint monitoring. "OpenAI can monitor Astra, but that doesn't mean an enterprise can audit Astra," Gogia said.
