Luo Zhenyu once said, "Information asymmetry is the biggest business in the world."
Applied to e-books, that statement is almost eerily accurate.
How many people, just to read a book, either buy a pirated link for a few yuan on Taobao or jump through seven or eight ads on messy websites just to download a virus-ridden compressed file. But on the other side, the National Library of China has already figured this out — as long as you have an ID card and register for a reader card, you can read e-books free of charge through official channels online, including ancient books, journals, papers, audio, and video.
This is not some shady back alley; it's the real deal under the national banner.
First, what is this platform?
The official website of the National Library of China Digital Library is nlc.cn. Readers can read books online through the "Reader Cloud Portal" (read.nlc.cn). This portal integrates digital resources built by the National Library, commercially purchased resources, and resources jointly built with local libraries, covering books, ancient texts, papers, journals, audio, video, and more.
Just in e-books alone, there are over 100,000 volumes, ranging from literary fiction to philosophy, history, and biographies. Basically, most major categories you'd want to read can be found here.
Compare it with certain websites, and you'll see the difference:

The comparison makes it clear: the National Library route is the only free and reliable option.
How to use it — three steps
Step one: open read.nlc.cn and click "Register" in the top right corner. Register with your phone number, enter a verification code, set a nickname and password, and your login account will be your phone number. The whole process is simpler than registering for a shopping account.
Step two: after registering, enter the public welfare reading page for e-books, type the book title or keyword in the search box. For example, if you want to read a certain author's works, just search their name.
Step three: select the e-book you like and click to read it online. No need to download a client — just read it directly in your browser.
One thing to note: each person is limited to one reader card, which can only be used by the cardholder. It cannot be applied for from another city or through a proxy. This is to prevent abuse of resources, and it also protects people who genuinely want to read.
Besides e-books, this platform also has the "Wenjin Search" platform (find.nlc.cn), which can search library catalogs and electronic resources, with fairly comprehensive on-site search capabilities. On mobile, there is also the official National Library app, which supports quick registration with a phone number, online application for an electronic reader card, and login via WeChat or QQ, so you can use it even when you're out and about.
Why is this worth mentioning?
Many people think "National Library of China" sounds far away from them, as if you have to go to Beijing to use it.
That's actually not true at all. This digital library service is open to readers across the whole country. You can register and use it no matter which city you're in. It's just sitting there, but most people don't know about it, or if they do, they can't be bothered to figure out the registration process.
This is the real information gap — not some deep technological barrier, but the simple wall between "I know" and "you don't know."
Luo Zhenyu also said, "If you don't manage your money, money won't manage you." The same applies here: "If you don't look for resources, resources won't come looking for you." The free official channel is right there. Whether you're willing to spend five minutes registering is your choice.
Tap the three dots in the top right corner of the official account homepage and star the author's account so you never miss timely money-making opportunities again.
Follow this account for at least three tested free tools/resources every week, without spending a cent.
