Xteink X4 generated a ton of buzz last year due to its low cost. Why is this e-reader so popular? You can buy it for $69, which is in impulse-buy territory. Some users are unhappy with the limited number of supported picture and e-book reading formats, which has prompted them to release custom firmware for the X4 called CrossPoint Reader. This custom firmware provides more text options, such as larger text size, improved text formatting & eBook layouts, and enhanced tools for transferring eBooks to the Xteink X4. The company has just released the X3 e-reader, which is even smaller than the X4.
The Xteink X3 features a 3.7″ E Ink Display with a resolution of 250 PPI. The processor is an ESP32 and comes with a 16 GB microSD card, with support for expansion up to 512 GB. It supports EPUB and TXT files for sideloaded content and can display JPG and BMP images. It does not have a front light system. Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz & Bluetooth wireless technology are included, but the device will not play audiobooks.
It has Magsafe to attach itself to a compatible phone, such as the iPhone, but is fully functional as a dedicated e-book reader. One of the big improvements in the X3 is the inclusion of physical page-turn buttons that also serve as menu navigation. One of the drawbacks of the device is charging: it only has a 350 mAh battery, and instead of charging via USB-C, it uses a magnetic pogo-pin connection.
This e-reader will easily fit in your pocket or whatever carrying bag you bring into the world. This is because it weighs a paltry 58 grams.
The X3 e-reader is available now for $79.00 USD on the Xteink website. They are also selling cases, reading lights, and various screen protectors. It remains unclear whether the existing CrossPoint Reader will be compatible with this or whether any coding changes are required.
